Pond Skaters & Surface Tention

The first experiment was done by taking water from the cup & dropping it into the lid. Here we learned how the water bubbles up round in order to keep it held together. This is called "surface tension."

The second experiment was to show how a pond skater uses surface tension so that he is able to be on the water. The paper clip signifies the pond skater.

Daddy helped with this one & he started by having Superkid try to put the paper clip on the water without the "L" shaped helper. (As you can tell by all of the paperclips that dropped to the bottom, it didn't work.) Daddy then explained how we needed to put the paper clip on the water without disturbing the surface tension.

Ta Da!!
We did it!!!!

I Got a great video of Superman & Superkid squirting each other with the dropper. Lots of fun!

Oh! I almost forgot to give the link to the pond skater videos we watched beforehand. Click here for some great footage of the amazing pond skater. :-)
